Edrea Martin entering Librarianship - Career moves

Working for the Cabarrus County Public Library System 2024I recently acquired a job in my local government as a Part-Time Library Assistant! I have been working at the Midland Public Library in Cabarrus County for about 4 weeks now.  This is a wonderful opportunity to attend UNCG for Library and Information Science, while being able to work in the types of systems we learn about at the same time.

Textile Design Student at the Rhode Island School of Design 2019-2022In a way, I unknowingly learned how organize, keep records, do research, and document my work/materials in a way that resembles building metadata. Also, learning how to dye, we were encouraged to keep color documentation. I was able to create many personal physical and digital collections of my most useful resources, art works, and of references that were fascinating to me in my time at RISD. Now that I work in a public library, the books remind me of the cones of yarn that needed to stay in the correct color sequence, in order to be accounted for and easilly accessed.

Volunteering at the Newark Free Public Library, New Castle County 2017My senior year of highschool I volunteered at my city’s public library in Newark, Delaware in 2017. In order to fullfill a community service requirement for graduation, this is where I first learned about the inner workings of a public library system. I worked behind the circulation desk and filled labeled pouches with books to send to the other branches in Delaware, because Delaware is sooo small.

Institutions that I find inspiring, that I’ve spent time in. Winterthur Museum
https://www.winterthur.org/
This is a museum that I grew up near, and went to often in the 2010s. Winterthur is a Library, Museum, and Garden. I was reminded of this museum while conducting research on their digital management system for LIS 640. This museum is the most beautiful museum I’ve ever been to and holds such a rich history. I also appreciate their conservation and repair workshops for textiles, allowing museum goers and attendees to participate as well.
Wilmington, DE
Fleet Library

I spent way too much time in this library during my undergrad, this was my third space. Fascinated by the history and transformation of this building, as it was once a bank and a hospital, it is now one of the oldest independent art libraries in the country. Also, it’s pretty much made up of all art books.

Brandywine Hundred Library

This Public library was right by where I used to have swimming lessons as a kid, we would check out VHS’s after the lessons and take them home. It is also the place where I got my first library card ever. What can I say... I am nostalgic, this was an awesome place to frequent, there is also a park next to the building.
Brandywine, DE
Brandywine River Museum of Art

This Museum exists to be admired, exhibiting artists of the brandywine valley, and the studios of the Wyeth family. Brandywine River Museum of Art also “sits at the intersection of art and nature” as they adhere to the Brandywine Conservancy’s commitment to the preservation of the natural, cultural and scenic resources of the region.
