Edrea Martin entering Librarianship - Courses & Coursework

Foundation of LIS - LIS 600
Here we learned about the present and the past surrounding LIS, the issues that we face today, and looking at the profession from different perspectives. This introduction to LIS helped me to begin to realize what I wanted to do in this field. My thoughts and ideas surrounding Librarians and Librarianship has changed completely, libraries are not just a place to find books and movies, they are places that are constantly subjected to change, they are a resource for marginalized communities, and provide free access to information.

Digital Libraries- LIS 644Learning how to build and input metadata, these are some on the collections I developed in CONTENTdm in LIS 644, additionally getting familiar with XML and the process of working with documents that may be hard to identify. Doing research like a detective might, when trying to be as accurate as possible with metadata inputs.
I also got the chance to digitize some of the pieces I have collected over the years.

Information Organization/Access - LIS 640Exploring and learning about different organization methods, allowing for access. Addressing ethical issues that may arise with the many systems that are used to organize data. In a group project, we examined Art & Architecture Thesaurus Information Organization Standard. It was interesting to learn about how this standard encompasses all art and the definition of art,  finding some gaps in the standard, and making observations on the standard; the hierarchies resemble species classification and medical standards structures. This was all very new for me, as I’ve never engaged with information like this before; it was a memorable experience analyzing these different systems and standards.
